Both organizations were started by volunteers and had a history of strong, grassroots community support, so communications needed to alleviate any concerns about loss of identity. As a result of the strategic communications planning, Family Promise of Greater Cleveland was able to manage the message and fully explain the reasons for merger to its clients, donors, volunteers, congregational supports, funders and other constituents in a timely manner, using a variety of communications methods to favorable reaction. The organization also received fair and positive coverage in The Plain Dealer on announcement day.
“We were delighted that people received the merger letter the same day as the announcement, and I’ve been to several meetings where the [Plain Dealer] article received favorable comment. I was pleased that so many congregations distributed the communications we sent, and no one has expressed concern or had questions. Also, I think your advice on making calls to supporters went a long way. [A local foundation leader] returned my call and said how much she appreciated hearing the news in advance as opposed to reading it in the paper. Thanks so much for all you did to help us roll this out smoothly! We really appreciate your efforts.”
